Heritage destinations in Devon now accessible for deaf people

For the first time ever, a cluster of tourist destinations in Devon have developed British Sign Language videos (BSL), enabling the Deaf community to have meaningful and engaging experiences with their heritage like never before.

Just in time for Deaf Awareness Week, Seaton Wetlands, Seaton Jurassic, Kents Cavern and National Trust Killerton are the four Devon locations that have so far created the videos in partnership with Heritage Ability.

The Artisan Market returns to Seaton over the early Bank Holiday weekend with a mix of stalls selling the very best quality art and craft items, upcycled gifts and handmade homeware on Saturday 5th May from 10am to 3pm. Protected dormice to be officially monitored at East Devon Nature Reserves

East Devon District Council Countryside Team Leader (Sites), James Chubb, has been granted a licence by Natural England to survey nationally protected dormice. The licence will allow the Countryside team to monitor this rare and declining mammal at the council’s nature reserves.

The National Dormouse Monitoring Project, which is co-ordinated by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, sets a framework for site surveys. After several years of working under the guidance of local mammologist Adrian Bayley, James is now able to undertake dormouse work under licence.

Budding photographers of all ages are invited to enter their best photographs of Seaton Devon, into Snap Seaton a brand new competition launched by Seaton Town Council.

The East Devon District Council Countryside Rangers have been left puzzled by some unusual feeding behaviour of a Barn Own at Seaton Wetlands.

Seaton Wetlands Nature Reserve, which is managed by the Countryside team on behalf of the council is home to a range of birds. Barn Owls are often seen flying over the reserve, particularly on summer evenings or in the morning after a wet night.

The 1st Seaton Rainbows marked World Wetlands Day with an evening of bird watching and crafts at Seaton Wetlands recently.

Joined by East Devon District Council’s Education ranger Penny Evans, the youngsters learnt about the significance of the international day which is used to raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetland environments which help to control flooding, improve bio-diversity and promote health and wellbeing.

Local charity Hospiscare has over 20 shops in Devon and relies heavily on the generosity of volunteers to run the stores. In the Seaton shop they have a core group of volunteers but could do with at least five more.

Rare dormice discovered at Holyford Woods Local Nature Reserve near Seaton

A dormice nest box scheme in Holyford Woods, near Seaton, has discovered a number of rare dormice living in the woods as well as other small mammals.

The East Devon District Council’s countryside rangers who run the scheme, check the boxes on a monthly basis, under licence from Natural England. They look for evidence of dormice as part of the People’s Trust for Endangered Species National Dormouse Programme.
