Crediton pupils’ WW1 work goes on display

Pupils at a Devon primary school have created their own ‘pop-up’ World War One museum which will be open to the community all next week.

The museum will feature period artefacts such as gas masks and shell casings which have been discovered in relatives’ attics as well as websites and projects featuring the children’s own research into family members who were involved in the war.

The extended project, at Landscore Primary School at Crediton, has been funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which has enabled Years 5 and 6 to work with a professional ancestry...

Chiefs remember fallen peers

For 100 years they had gone unnoticed, but 12 former Exeter Rugby Club players and officials were today officially remembered with a new commemorative plaque at Sandy Park.

The lives of the forgotten few were highlighted in a special memorial service which took place in a special Remembrance Service held at the stadium on Armistice Day.

First World War memorial website launches

An online memorial to the fallen men of the Clinton Devon Estates communities has been launched.

The website, www.devonremembers.co.uk was created from information gathered by volunteers from across the Estate's towns and villages.

The event was attended by key people from the Estate, local media and the volunteers and historians that tirelessly researched and compiled the stories of those who fell during the war.

People are invited to add their own stories and photographs on the site, or by emailing mail@devonremembers.co.uk .

Miniature war sculpture set to make a big impact

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the First World War, an Exeter gallery is unveiling a miniature war sculpture that will also raise funds for The Royal British Legion. Castle Galleries, Exeter, will unveil ‘Never Forgotten’ by Nic Joly, a poignant commemorative piece to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Hundreds of postcards have been written to those affected by the outbreak of the First World War from people today, as a form of memorial and recognition.

These letters are not only to the soldiers, medics and the war horses that served, but also to the millions of civilians who remained at home and contributed to the war effort.

Residents in Devon who have family links to World War One are being invited to share the stories, memories and artefacts that link their family to the war.

It's part of a special anniversary being held to commemorate the beginning of World War 1

A special service to mark this occasion will be held at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday 3 August. The service is open to everyone, but particularly welcome are Devon families with family links to WW1. The service will begin at 4pm

A major historical project, designed to preserve the history of army children from the First World War, is attempting to trace an Exeter family from an archived photo (above).

Currently all that is known about the photo is it was taken and developed by Alan Mills of Paris Street in Exeter but there are no obvious clues to help identify the two girls and their parents.

The father’s uniform also doesn’t bear any distinguishing markings making it difficult to date the photo as the evolving elements of military uniforms (such as badges and accoutrements), are essential guides...
