Exeter schoolboy reaches Bananagrams Challenge live final

Eleven-year-old Taylor Murphy of Whipton Barton Junior School in Exeter has beaten almost 25,000 other UK primary school children to win a place in the live Grand Final of The BANANAGRAMS Challenge.

After triumphing over his classmates in the first stage of the free-to-enter national tournament earlier this year, Taylor’s impressive word skills in the online rounds secured him one of just 12 coveted places at the Final, which will see the UK’s Top Banana crowned on 30 April 2016.

Exeter mum's search for lifesaving donor

A mother from Exeter who has leukaemia is appealing for people to register online as potential blood stem cell donors with Delete Blood Cancer UK.

The appeal is being made by 36-year-old mother of three Kate Barnett, who needs to find a matching donor to save her life. If a matching donor isn’t found for her, she will have to resort to receiving blood stem cells from her 17 year old son who is not a perfect match for her, which is a higher risk procedure than receiving blood stem cells from a perfectly matching donor.

700 more Exeter streetlights to go part-time

Around 700 streetlights in residential streets in Heavitree and Whipton Barton will be converted to part-night lighting from Monday 18 January.

The converted streetlights, previously on all-night, will be switched off from about 12:30am to 5:30am, before coming on again at dawn.

The change is part of Devon County Council’s (DCC) on-going programme to reduce costs and carbon emissions across the county.

Lighting on main and on the busiest roads, local footpaths and walk-home routes will remain on all night.

Local NHS Trust finishes runner-up in national patient experience awards

The NHS Trust that runs Exeter Community Hospital in Whipton and community health and social care services across the city finished runner-up at a national awards ceremony for its work to resolve complaints at the earliest possible stage.

The Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust was a finalist in the Patient Experience Network National Awards (PENNA), which took place at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Firefighters called to derelict church blaze

Firefighters spent over an hour at a church in Brookway, Whipton today after reports the derelict building was on fire.

Reports of the fire, at The Old Church, came in at 3.37am with two appliances from Middlemoor and Danes Castle being deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival crews immediately asked for two more fire fighting appliances and an aerial appliance to assist in extinguishing the fire which was well alight.

The incident is believed to be deliberate and not, as reported earlier, caused by the use of hot metal cutting equipment.

Bike Blaze in Whipton

In the last few hours, fire crews have been called to put out a motorcycle fire in Whipton, Exeter.

The incident, which occurred at Summer Lane on Saturday evening, involved one vehicle being severely damaged in what is believed to be a deliberate attack.

One fire engine from Middlemoor station was sent out, and the crew extinguished flames using buckets of water. No injuries have been reported.

Police appeal for information about robbery in Whipton

A 19-year-old man was knocked down and robbed in Whipton on Tuesday night.

The victim was held down by three offenders while they took money from his pockets. The men ran off leaving the victim uninjured. The offenders are described as white, male and all aged between 18 and 20. Two of the men were wearing dark clothing, a third man was wearing a blue and cream striped jumper and is described as being stocky with short blond hair with a Birmingham accent. The robbery took place on Summerway in Whipton at around 8.30pm. Police would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time...

Police appeal for witnesses after attempted robbery

Police are appealing for the public’s help in identifying a suspect (pictured) after an attempted robbery in St Thomas, Exeter. The incident happened on Monday 5 August at around 9.10am outside the Post Office in Okehampton Road. The victim, a 27-year-old woman from Whipton, approached the Post Office to pay in the takings from a local store when she was approached by a white man from behind who was riding a push bike. The victim was pushed by the offender who grabbed at the bag she was carrying and said “give me the money”. A brief struggle then ensued between the victim and the offender...
