A retrospective of two eminent artists takes place in a Devon gallery from January 15 for 11 days only.

From January 15 to January 26 Artizan Gallery in Lucius Street, Torquay will be showing a “significant collection” of linocuts by Arthur Homeshaw RWA (1933–2011) and abstract architectural paintings by Richard Slater RI.

“We are fortunate to hold a significant collection from both artists including the largest commercial collection of Homeshaw's works,” reveals owner Julie Brandon. “For several years now it has been rewarding to see the recognition for these two talented practitioners grow, with Slater achieving sell-out shows, and Homeshaw receiving a high level of attention from collectors. In this exhibition, we look forward to once again celebrating the successes of both these artists, in a joint show that will allow their works to compliment and contrast each other through careful selection from our collection.”

Arthur Homeshaw was a Westcountry artist who specialised in producing linocuts and works in pastels. “Furthermore, his work displays an imagination that is both exuberant yet introverted and at times secretive,” says Julie Brandon. “This paradoxical quality infuses all his work.”

The power of his images was the product of a reputation that had been established over 50 years of artistic endeavour. From 1964 he was a member of the Royal West of England Academy and in his last exhibition there in 2010, he was a senior member of the Academy.

Arthur Homeshaw’s work (Dockside Terraces) has been purchased by the Victoria & Albert Museum. In addition, his linocuts were selected for the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1964, 1984 and 1985.

Richard Slater RI, in his 91st year, still paints everyday. He finds inspiration for his works on walks, gathering aspects of topography in sketchbooks. Back in the studio, these sketches are brought together to create an impressionistic vision. “It is at that point that I start to think more abstractly and architecturally, building the painting from those blocks,” he says. “I make that connection, I make chunks of the picture, transferring it all gradually to a flat plane – and that’s the job really.”

There will be a preview on January 19 from 6pm to 8pm.
