Exeter Ramblers reveal hidden walking trails of Exeter

The Exeter and District Ramblers have produced a collection of hand-picked trails to encourage Exeter residents to get outside and discover a new side to their city.

The collection has been published as a book called Walking Around Exeter, with contributions from different members of the group and tested for accuracy and clarity. The 16 routes in the collection range from 2.5 to 7 miles in length, and are suitable for all ages and abilities.

People in Devon are being invited to step out with the Ramblers for their Walk About festival this summer and uncover the hidden gems on their doorstep. The nationwide festival, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, takes place from 26 May to 3 June with hundreds of free group walks on offer across the Britain. This year, many of the festival walks highlight hidden gems that can be found along the way – from unexpected views and peaceful picnic spots to atmospheric ancient ruins – that can often only be spotted when you head out on foot.

Ramblers help bring new bridge to Dartmoor

Walkers following the popular Two Moors Way across Dartmoor can now enjoy an easier crossing of the river Teign at Frenchbeer, Chagford thanks to a generous donation from a local walking group.

Moorland Ramblers provided a £300 donation to Dartmoor National Park Authority to help fund the cost of the replacement bridge following winter storms. The work was co-ordinated by National Park Ranger Pete Rich, with assistance from local farmers and contractor Allan Tyson of SW Countryside Contracts.

Autumn is a perfect time to explore the countryside, so East Devon District Council's Countryside team would like to invite walkers to enjoy a circular guided autumn ramble on Saturday 24 October, from 10am-1pm, around Knapp Copse, one of East Devon’s most beautiful nature reserves, near Sidmouth.

The Ramblers is calling on young people in the South West to head off the beaten track to explore footpaths in their area, in the very first project to gather a complete picture of the state of footpaths throughout England and Wales.

The Ramblers has launched the Big Pathwatch, the nation’s biggest ever footpath survey, following new research that reveals path problems in England, including the South West, are on the rise.

With more than 8,750 problems recorded on paths in the South West and more than 86,000 in England, the Ramblers fears this isn’t the full picture and that the scale of the problem is far bigger.
