Chief Thomas to call time on Exeter career

Haydn Thomas says he is looking forward to an exciting new chapter in his Exeter Chiefs career after confirming he will be retiring from playing at the end of the season. The long-serving scrum-half has played a pivotal role in the rise of the Devon club over the years, amassing 211 appearances and 46 tries, but will now move into a new full-time academy role with the club from next season. Thomas debuted for the then National League One club back in 2003 in an away fixture at Bedford, before his career took him to the Premiership where he featured for both Gloucester and Bristol. Haydn Thomas insists there will be no panic within the ranks despite Exeter Chiefs slipping to a third successive Aviva Premiership defeat on Saturday.

In what was Thomas' 200th appearance for the Devon outfit, it was former club Gloucester who took the spoils 26-25 in a highly entertaining encounter at a packed Sandy Park.

After back-to-back losses away to Sale Sharks and Bath Rugby, Rob Baxter's side were hoping a return to familiar home surroundings would provide the ideal catalyst for them to rediscover their winning formula.

Sadly, it was not to be as the...

Thomas 'excited' by Euro Draw

Haydn Thomas says he is "excited" at the challenge that lies ahead for Exeter Chiefs following today's European Professional Rugby Challenge Cup draw in Switzerland.

The Devon club, who were among the top seeds for the new-look competition, have been pitted in Pool Two alongside French Top14 sides Bayonne and La Rochelle, as well as Rabo Prodirect12 outfit Connacht Rugby.

Head coach Rob Baxter was happy to salute his side’s latest Aviva Premiership victory over London Wasps, but he still believes his Exeter Chiefs side have yet to hit top form this season, writes Mark Stevens.

The Chiefs maintained their unbeaten home record in the top flight as they overcame Wasps 30-23 at Sandy Park thanks to tries from Chris Whitehead, Haydn Thomas and Phil Dollman, as well as 15 points from the boot of leading points -scorer Gareth Steenson.

Exeter’s win – their sixth in the Premiership this term – not only helped lift the Chiefs back into the division’s...

Rob Baxter’s side made it a perfect five from five at home in the Aviva Premiership as they overcame visiting London Wasps at Sandy Park.

The Westcountry’s finest moved into the top five courtesy of tries from Chris Whitehead, Haydn Thomas and Phil Dollman; whilst fly-half Gareth Steenson weighed in with the remainder of the Devon side’s points. For Wasps, it meant yet more misery for Londoners on Devon soil – they have now lost all three previous encounters at Sandy Park – and all they could muster was a losing bonus point courtesy of Tommy Bell’s late penalty. Fresh from their first...
