To celebrate Exeter's national designation as a 'Heritage Harbour' the city is hosting a series of maritime events this year. The year of celebrations launches this May with a cultural festival, culminating on Sunday 28 May and featuring events for all of the family, many of them completely free. Expect live cannon firing, shanty bands and live music,...

Funding bid to replace Mallison Bridge

A replacement for Exeter Quay’s Mallison Bridge could be back on the cards through a bid for government cash.

The wooden bridge, originally built in 1984 and named after a professor who left money to the city, closed in 2018 because of safety concerns after its timbers rotted. It was torn down in 2020.

As a result, a small alleyway next to Commercial Road is currently the only way for pedestrians and cyclists to access the main part of the quay from Cricklepit Suspension Bridge.

Planning permission for a replacement pedestrian and cycle bridge was given in...

Quay bridge replacement 'not ruled out'

The wait to replace a well-known former bridge at Exeter’s quay is likely to go on after it was left off the city council’s proposed new budget.

The owners of the property Kennaway Estates Ltd bought the property as a shell and have sympathetically refurbished and converted the property into seven luxury “loft living” style apartments and two ground floor commercial units with glorious views over the River Exe.

The commercial units are occupied by café – bar Puerto Lounge and an Asian Fusion restaurant called Wabi-Sabi. Both restaurants have riverside, outdoor seating areas, so diners can make the most of the views while they enjoy the great food.

New life saving water safety equipment installed at Exeter Quay

New life saving water safety equipment installed at Exeter Quay

Six new potentially lifesaving throw line boards and reach poles have been installed at locations around Exeter Quay with the aim to reduce drownings around the area.

Between 2015 and 2019, confirmed fatality statistics show that ten lives have been lost on Exeter's waterways.

Nationally, around half of people who drown had no intention of being in water – they may have been walking, running, or jump in the water after their dog. There is also an increased likelihood after drinking alcohol. According to the latest national data, double the number of people drowned after...
