A community was today in mourning after the death of a 12-year-old boy following a collision with a lorry in Exeter.

Flowers were laid at the scene of the accident on the junction of Topsham Road and the Countess Wear roundabout.

Among the heartfelt messages was one which read: “The little lad with the biggest, cheesiest smile. Taken far too soon. RIP little fella. Bunches, Shannon, Alfie and Ellie xxxxx”.

Another read: “I send my love and thoughts to your family at this hard time. You were not alone in your final moments on this earth”.

Many drivers and pedestrians shook their heads as they passed the scene, with one woman stopping for a moment and clutching her chest.

The collision happened on the zebra crossing on the Topsham side of Countess Wear roundabout yesterday afternoon (28 August).

The boy, from Exeter, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

The lorry driver was uninjured.

The road was closed for five hours while serious collision investigators carried out an examination of the scene.

Police are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 101, quoting log 480 of 28/08/2014.
