Devon karate club hosts international seminar

Last weekend, East Devon’s fastest growing traditional Karate club marked its 2 year anniversary with a prestigious Seminar and grading event at LED’s Ottery St. Mary Leisure Centre.

More than twenty (Japanese-graded) black-belt Karate Instructors from across the UK and Europe for a special celebration event in honour of the late Shihan Leo Lipinski (8th Dan), who passed away this year.

SYTL (Say Yes To Life) Karate was launched by Sensei Paul Batters (Japanese graded black-belt) in September 2016 with the aim of providing the highest standards of Martial Arts, to the widest range of people, for the lowest possible price.

Having started with just 2 classes, and a handful of students, Karate teacher and Personal Trainer Paul, with the support of LED Leisure, now runs 12 classes per week with over 150 attendees of all ages and abilities from 4 to 94!

He said: “Its an honour and a privilege to see the changes and improvements in so many people of all ages in such a short time.

"Over my 15yrs teaching experience I see first-hand the benefits that Karate gives every student, the Confidence, Fitness, Concentration, Discipline and of corse Self-Defense learned through Martial Arts is second to none.

"I’m very proud of all of our students and look forward to the SYTL family growing and growing so that we can help as many people as possible.”

SYTL Karate Club has members ranging from white belt beginners to 6th Dan black belts.

They also helps students with many physical & psychological challenges including ADHD, autism, asperges, anxiety, depression, dyspraxia, amputees to name just a few.

In addition to regular classes, SYTL also holds a wide variety of events throughout the year such as Karate Pool Parties, Flying Kick competitions, Tournaments, Holiday Karate Camps, Halloween Fancy Dress Karate & Christmas classes with Sensei Santa!

Regular gradings are held to enable students to progress and be rewarded as they gain experience and improve in ability. SYTL’s Gradings are Internationally recognised.

Paul added: “For those who are unsure on learning Karate, we are also starting a new “Fight-Fit” class which is a Martial Arts-based circuit class for Teens & Adults. You don’t have to be great to start, but you do have to start to be great!”

The club runs eight classes a week at Honiton Leisure Centre on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, and is launching 4 brand new classes in Ottery on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Kings’ School. with a variety of sessions covering all ages and abilities.
