Home-owners in Exeter will be pleased to learn that their risk of being burgled is one of the lowest in the country.

In a study commissioned by The Safe Shop, released yesterday, the city was ranked fourth of 83 cities included in the nationwide 'Burglary Risk Score' table making them one of the least at risk in the country.

The table used national burglary statistics, sales data from The Safe Shop, the UK's largest security provider and each area's relative population size to produce an overall risk score. Exeter's low burglary rate and high 'security awareness' score meant they finished in the top five.

The study was produced as part of National Home Security month which runs throughout October.

Over recent years burglary figures have seen increases of nearly 20% over the Winter months, with the awareness month being set up last year to help combat this worrying trend.

Despite Exeter's low risk score, Anthony Neary, a security expert advised being vigilant as the nights get darker, "With the dark nights approaching fit a security light. If you have one fitted make sure it’s working. People forget this sort of the thing over the bright summer months when they’re not needed."
