Police are appealing for witnesses to a seven-vehicle collision on the A38 at Haldon Hill, Exeter, in which an elderly man suffered serious injuries.

The collision happened on the descent of the hill on the Exeter-bound carriageway on Friday 20 February, shortly after 5.50pm.

A black BMW 318i was involved in the collision with a blue Ford Ka, blue Fiat Punto, white Ford Fiesta van, white Audi A3, green VW Golf and black Peugeot 3008.

The rear seat passenger of the Ford Ka, a 78-year-old man from the Dobwalls area, was trapped in the vehicle and cut free by the fire service.

He suffered life-threatening neck and chest injuries and was taken by ambulance to Derriford Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

The 35-year old-male driver of the BMW, from the Launceston area, was among five other casualties taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with relatively minor injuries.

A specialist forensic investigation of the scene took place resulting in the A38 being closed for 10 and a half hours.

Officers from the Serious Collisions Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward.

Witnesses are asked to email 101@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting reference 583 of 20 February.
