It is thought that up to 40 Exeter-based City Link drivers could lose their jobs after the firm announced it had gone into administration on Christmas Day.

The firm has a depot on Marsh Barton, which is likely to be affected.

On the company's Exeter Chamber of Commerece web page the compnay says: "Our drivers are the biggest ambassadors of our business and you will usually see the same driver on a daily basis at an agreed collection time.

"Our people are at the heart of our business and take pride in everything they do. We continually invest in training programmes to create a safe and accountable environment promoting a ‘can do’ attitude allowing us to develop a highly motivated and committed team."

Mick Cash, general secretary of the RMT union, said: "This is the bitterest blow any group of workers could receive on Christmas Day and it is absolutely shocking that the company have sprung this announcement once all the Christmas deliveries have been completed. They knew that the administrators had been brought in and yet refused to confirm it in a cynical effort to bury the bad news.

"RMT will do everything within its power to mobilise a political and industrial fight to save the thousands of jobs that have been put at risk as a result of this shock announcement."
