A BIG Active Mums Celebratory ride will join Buckland Fun Day at Sandringham Park, Newton Abbot on Saturday 27 August where taster sessions will be offered to the local community and mums, with the opportunity to have a go on bikes and trailers throughout the afternoon.

The community fun day will allow mums to chat in a relaxed and friendly environment while learning all about the benefits of cycling with a baby or toddler and the support available to them.

Since 2013, the Active Mums rides have been taking place every week with qualified ride leaders taking out local mums and their babies in a group to encourage activity during maternity leave. These rides offer social, mental and physical health benefits as well as a support network and a unique, hassle free activity to help bond with their little ones.

They have now been rolled out across Devon by Public Health, Cycle Devon and Active Devon who saw the success of the Newton Abbot programme and supported other areas. Other areas of the UK have followed the Teignbridge initiative and started encouraging more active mums rides for postnatal exercise and social, physical and mental health benefits.

For mums keen to take on a challenge, there will be the opportunity for Active Mums to tackle the Tour of Britain finish line at Haytor on Friday 9 September, prior to the professional riders following the same route hours later.

Cllr George Gribble, Teignbridge District Council's Deputy Leader and Executive Spokesman for Recreation and Leisure said: “I welcome the opportunity for local mums to lead an active lifestyle and this initiative certainly helps improve the health and wellbeing of Teignbridge’s communities. We are committed to improving cycling provisions and encouraging greater physical activity and there are plenty of associated benefits of parents and toddlers getting out on their bikes.”

Cllr Gordon Hook, Teignbridge District Council ward member for Buckland and Milber said:

"Buckland today, Tokyo next. We have all been inspired by the awesome success of Team GB at the Olympic Games, winning more medals than ever before. Our cyclists did particularly well, but that level of ability isn't necessary to take part in some basic fitness work. Physical activity has huge health benefits at whatever level, and this is a great way to get started. There are so many excellent reasons for parents of all ages to give it a go, so I very much hope many will and I would encourage all to simply come and give it a go this Saturday. I hope to see you there."

Cllr Colin Parker, Teignbridge District Council ward member for Buckland and Milber said: "This initiative was and is welcomed and can only benefit Mums and their children. The enjoyment of socialising with other families whilst getting exercise should not be underrated. I commend this to all interested and look forward to seeing them at the Buckland Fun Day"

Cllr Reg Winsor, Teignbridge District Council ward member for Buckland and Milber said: "I would like to applaud the Mums and organisers of the Active for Mums bike rides. We have been extremely fortunate to have so many people in the Buckland area that show their enthusiasm and not just talking about it but actually carrying it out. Well done Mums."
