A local writer is working with charity CEDA to develop an exciting play set in the African wilderness about accepting disability and difference.

The play Impisi will be performed at Exmouth Pavilion on March 12th at 7pm.
Clive Essame is a creative writer and playwright based in Devon. He writes about disability, difference and acceptance using African animals to tell the story.

Clive’s script Impisi is about the king of the animal kingdom, a lion named Nkosi. When Nkosi becomes injured he looses his strength and with it his pride. The story explores issues of difference and disability as the lion and the other animals come to terms with what has happened and it follows Nkosi’s rocky route to recovery, assisted by an unlikely friend, Impisi the Hyena.
The play tackles important issues in a light hearted and fun way.

Play wright Clive said’ ‘’The play demonstrates some of the issues which are faced by people who are different in anyway. The reactions from the different animals reflect the different attitudes people in society have towards disability and difference. The play teaches some important moral lessons in an engaging and fun way and I can’t wait to see it performed.’’

Clive is working with local charity CEDA, based in Exeter. All of the people in the play have disabilities themselves. Clive said, ‘’I think its great that CEDA have committed to the play and the ideas behind the play. The actors, staff and everyone else involved have worked together to create an innovative piece of theatre that shows what can be achieved with hard work, enthusiasm and a spirit of working together. My aims for the performance are that the audience will see a great show and maybe see disability in a different light afterwards.’’

Tickets for the play are available to purchase on the Exmouth Pavilion website www.ledleisure.co.uk/exmouth-pavilion/whats-on or over the phone 01395 222 477.
