Oh yes, it’s Ladies’ Night! The 80s themed Twilight Walk at Exmouth on Saturday July 8th is fast approaching and open to all female walkers.  All proceeds will go to renowned local charity, Hospiscare.

One group of ten ladies who will be taking part is Melissa and her friends and colleagues from The Dolphin Nursery and Pre-School in Exmouth. The walk is a lot of fun and Melissa has taken part twice before. Like many of the walkers, she has very personal reasons for wanting to help raise money for Hospiscare.

“I lost my Mum to cancer in November last year,” Melissa remembers. “During the months after diagnosis the care we received was second to none. The level of professionalism shown by the team in Exeter was humbling, to say the least.  As a family we all felt very privileged to have them look after Mum and nothing was ever too much trouble for them.”

In particular, Melissa remembers the care with which Hospiscare ensured her mother was able to still celebrate her birthday. “The team worked hard to ensure that the occasion went ahead as planned,” she says. “Oxygen was sorted and various bottles provided so that Mum could fulfil her wish for ‘afternoon tea’ with her two daughters.”

Melissa is also full of praise for her work colleagues from The Dolphin Nursery and Pre-School who she refers to as her ‘Dolphin family’.

“Mum used to work for us and was a massive part of the ‘Dolphin family’. Granny Wendy, as she was called by all the children, became our cook when we opened in 2011 and continued working up until August last year. She was our rock and everyone looked up to her as she bravely fought her battle. Some of the team from The Dolphin had never experienced the work Hospiscare do before and they saw how well Granny Wendy was looked after while at home and during her stays in the hospice. They also saw the support both she and we as a family were given at the time, and after, and they wanted to say thank you too.”
She continues: “Hospiscare offer an amazing level of support to patients and family members… the staff feel honoured to work there and it shows. At what is generally a horrible and sad time, they make it less so. Everyone from the receptionist, the lovely ladies in the coffee shop to the nurses and doctors, they all have a level of compassion which leaves a mark on you in such a positive way.”
