Wedgewood Buildings, which is based at East Anstey, near Tiverton, Devon, has recently received vital funding in the form of a £25,000 DEFRA grant.

This has allowed the company to begin expanding capacity and developing the business further.

These grants, which originate from the European Union, recognise that rural development is a vitally important, while farming and forestry remain crucial for the management of natural resources and the maintenance of the countryside.

Wedgewood’s grant equated to 40% of the purchase price of a Serra Montana sawmill, which cuts entire tree trunks into high quality timber components. Due to its extremely accurate cutting, this could involve producing massive oak beams for use in A frames, or at the other end of the scale, timber lengths for making furniture or kitchen units.

Director Rob Plume said: “We are very grateful for DEFRA for this considerable sum, which represented 40% of the total cost of our saw.  We have already seen benefits, both in terms of quality and increased production.  Without the grant we definitely could not have bought the equipment, whereas now, we are perfectly positioned at the beginning of the building season to crack on with the orders already on our books, and to bid for any new business that comes our way.”

Although they craft furniture, and as Rob says ‘anything made of wood!’ Wedgewood Buildings specialise in bespoke, high quality timber-framed buildings. This can range from whole houses, to extensions, conservatories, porches, stables, garages or additional garden rooms for work or pleasure. Wedgewood Buildings is very cost effective when compared to more well know companies, such as those which advertise in glossy life style magazines, but this is never at the cost of either design or customer care.

Rob explains: “We understand what a massive investment a self build, or large extension is and just how stressful it can be if not planned and thought through properly from the outset. It’s important to get it just right and we really listen to our customers’ requirements, helping them to solve any problems in the planning stage, before the build starts. We can also produce a photo-real computer image of any design, so clients can envisage their finished home in place, ensuring they’ll be delighted with the end result”.

In addition, Wedgewood Building is a green choice, as their wood is harvested locally, wherever possible.  Also, all their waste timber, for example the bark edges sawn from tree trunks and off-cuts, is chipped on the premises.  This in turn is used to feed the Biomass Boiler which provides all the heat for the Wedgewood site and workshops.

Surely this company has all the credentials to really make their mark in the timber framed sector in the near future.
