The First World War was a time of momentous change for individual people, families and society, when thrift and economy in dress became increasingly important on the home front.

Woollen serge and silk taffeta in dark or neutral colours were frequently worn as the availability of fabrics and dyestuffs was restricted. Practical, hard-wearing suits or ‘costumes’, and washable shirt-waister blouses became a kind of everyday uniform for women in Britain during the war.

Castle Drogo Spring Fling

The Castle Drogo Youth Panel has planned a free community open evening to celebrate Museums at Night on Friday 15 May. From 6pm until 9pm, the gates will be flung open for all local people to come up and enjoy spending time at the castle outside normal opening hours. The Youth Panel’s aim is for this to be a chilled out evening where visitors can stroll in the garden, relax on the lawns, listen to music and watch the sun go down. Jurassic Park style DNA sampling at RAMM

DNA from a rare specimen of an extinct mammal will be sampled, Jurassic Park style at the Ark, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery’s archive.

Although, unlike in the film, the technology doesn't yet exist to bring the animal back to life, the DNA will be important for a research project into the species. Until the two Swan Island hutia were brought to light at RAMM, researcher Roseina Woods had just 12 specimens in the UK to work on. Devon museums part of national scheme

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery are to be part of a national programme of pioneering collaborations between artists, museums and audiences.

Thanks to major funding support from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts programme, New Expressions 3 (NE3) will bring together 15 museums from across England in partnership with the National Trust and the Contemporary Visual Arts Network.
