Snow storm hits New York City just one week after Sandy

Just over one week after one of the largest and most devastating Atlantic hurricanes on record hit north-east America, a snow storm has one again caused significant damage and left thousands without power or heat.

The so-called 'nor'easter' is a macro-scale storm along the East Coast of the United States and Atlantic Canada; it gets its name from the direction the wind is coming from. Nor'easters can cause hurricane-like conditions with coastal flooding and blizzards.

(NewsPoint) - Hitting New York City on Wednesday night repair work following Sandy was put on hold as freezing winds, snow and rain battered the city. Many people badly affected by Sandy, and no where close to recovery were set back as work was halted and fears of further damage were heightened. All construction in the city was banned due to concerns of a repeat of one of the most shocking affects of Hurricane Sandy, when a large construction crane collapsed.

4.7 inches of snow were recorded in Central Park, setting the record for the most amount of snow in October or November in the city since records began 130 years ago. As a result approximately 1,800 flights were cancelled, and train networks were delayed or stopped altogether as the storm passed.

As many celebrated the victory of Barack Obama as president for a second term on Wednesday night, New Yorkers appear to have felt abandoned, and called for the government's help:

"@conservaliberty What is this administration doing to help those in NJ and NY with the Nor'Easter storm coming in? Hardly any coverage of those suffering."

"@kinkysith I know we had an election and all that, but I’ve heard nothing about what’s going on in NY/NJ. Especially with the current storm."

"@gopmommy: Election over, so Obama doesnt have to pretend 2 care. FEMA closing shelters during snowstorm after Sandy"
