City fans invited to join Somme trip

In Exeter City FC’s recent Northampton match day programme an article appeared called 'Remembering the Football Battalion'.

This described the formation of the Battalion, made up of footballers, which included 10 players from Clapton Orient (now Leyton Orient) including Nolan Evans who had previously played 70 League and Cup appearances for Exeter City between 1910 and 1912.

The Battalion fought at the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and Nolan was injured during this at Delville Wood. Three Orient players were killed.

Steve Jenkins from Leyton Orient, who has written a book on the battalion, has invited City fans to join them on a trip to the Somme in July 2016 (the centenary of the battle).

It would maybe give us the chance to pay respects to at least four former City players who died on the Somme in July 1916: Evelyn Lintott, Fred Bailey, Arthur Evans and Percy Worner.
