BBC Radio Devon managing editor Mark Grinnell has finally broken his silence about the decision to sack popular presenter Judi Spiers.

After four days of saying nothing he has published a formal statement via the station’s Facebook page.

It said the following:

“Thank you to all who have posted messages about the Judi Spiers Show on BBC Radio Devon.

“As Managing Editor I am responsible for the station’s schedule and would like to explain my decision.

“First of all I want to assure you that the decision was not taken lightly. Judi has presented in the same slot for a long time and like a lot of Local Radio presenters she has a passionate audience.

“However, after a lot of thought, we felt the time had come for a change. All BBC Local Radio stations schedules – as well as national and other commercial stations - do evolve from time to time.

“A variety of reasons are taken into account on these occasions, including the measured performance of both the station and the programme, the balance of the line-up and the station's editorial aims.

“Judi is a great entertainer, and I wish her every success in her future career.”
