Pitch perfect: Football meets rugby in Exeter’s Strive ‘25 takeover

Exeter City Community Trust, the charitable arm of Exeter City Football Club, is stepping into a new sport as it joins a major national initiative to grow women’s rugby in the city ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

The organisation, which is more used to the beautiful game than the oval ball, is joining with Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City Council as the delivery partner for the Strive ‘25 Rugby Challenge, a national programme aimed at engaging 25,000 women and girls in rugby across host cities. A charity supporting children and young people through the loss of family members has been gifted £1,000 to support its work in the region.

Balloons provides pre and post-bereavement support to children and young people and their families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon and has been awarded funds from Persimmon Homes South West’s Community Champions fund.

AS the bank holiday approaches, organisers of Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life are calling on the people of Exeter to put their time off to good use by picking a date and event to help beat cancer.

This year, for the first time, Cancer Research UK is inviting everyone – women, men and children – to join the Race for Life.

Monday saw Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life team with the help of cancer survivor Lyndsey Balsdon, Snap Fitness, and Starbucks, paint the town pink across various locations in the City of Exeter.

The team at Snap Fitness took part in the event by holding a Spinathon. Starbucks also supported the event by handing out Race for Life Coffee cup holders to all their customers, and they even managed to turn their Coffee pink for the day to support such a fantastic cause.

Saturday 6 July will be a BIG day in Exmouth for local charity Hospiscare . Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare will be holding their Family Fun Day at Manor Gardens from 10am – 4pm with live entertainment and lots of fun activities. An exciting new event comes to Devon for the first time later this year when Hospiscare hosts Wild Tri, and its big brother, Wild Tri Extreme.

Instead of snow, it was high winds and rain that tested the ever growing band of men who took part in Hospiscare ’s Men’s Walk this year. Just under 1000 resilient men signed up for the challenge, making it Hospiscare’s most successful Men’s Walk to date.

The weather conditions were again challenging but spirits were high as the walkers set off from the Double Locks pub. Along the route they were buoyed by an amazing team of dedicate volunteers offering support and encouragement. An Exeter man who works with children who have been sexually abused is hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for the NSPCC’s ‘Together for Childhood’ programme by running the London Marathon.

Bartosz Zaniewski, who works at the NSPCC’s service centre in Plymouth, set himself the challenge in order to highlight how organisations across the city are working together with local communities to find out the best way to prevent child sexual abuse.
