Injured Royal Marine to represent GB

An injured Royal Marine from Exeter has been chosen to represent Britain in the rowing events at the forthcoming Invictus Games. Ray Lowrie, 33, sustained a severe fractured ankle while on Exercise in Norway that ultimately led to his leg being amputated. He turned to specialist armed forces injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell for help and support and his legal team has since secured interim payments from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to pay for an adapted bungalow to help him live independently. Following the accident Ray discovered that he had a flair for rowing after taking up the sport to...

Too little, too late for City

The Grecians fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to Mansfield Town on Saturday in Sky Bet League 2.

First-half goals from Rakish Bingham – making his debut for Mansfield – and Fergus Bell gave the Stags a two-goal advantage at the interval.

Matt Grimes, on from the bench, netted a stunning free-kick for a reinvigorated City side after the break.

But the home side couldn’t force that equaliser and ultimately were downed 2-1 by their guests from Nottinghamshire.

With players returning to fitness, Christian Ribeiro and Alex Nicholls went straight into the starting XI...

Super start for Exeter Chiefs

If this is the sign of things to come, then Exeter Chiefs supporters can expect a pretty exciting season ahead in the Aviva Premiership.

Rob Baxter’s side produced a stellar, record-breaking performance to ruin London Welsh’s return to English rugby’s top tier.

Debutant Thomas Waldrom led the charge with two tries, but there were a further five touchdowns for the Devonians who amassed over 50 points in the Premiership for the first time.

Dave Ewers, Sam Hill, Ian Whitten, Jack Arnott and Chrysander Botha also got in on the scoring act, while fly-half Gareth Steenson...

Pre-season has come and gone for another year, but now it's down to the 'real stuff' as Exeter Chiefs prepare to kick-off their fifth year in the Aviva Premiership.

First up for Rob Baxter's side is Sunday's trip to newly-promoted London Welsh, a side the Devon club know all too well following numerous encounters with the Exiles in both the Premiership and RFU Championship.

It's a clash which, according to Baxter, should provide the ideal starting point for his Class of 2014/15 as they prepare for a new term of action in English rugby's top flight.

The Chiefs head...

Exeter Chiefs captain Dean Mumm will watch from the Kassam Stadium stands when his team’s new Aviva Premiership season kicks off against London Welsh on Sunday, but has faith in his young team-mates to begin with a bang.

The former Australia lock underwent surgery on his shoulder over the summer and is not fit enough to lead out the reigning LV= Cup holders this weekend.

It means a youthful looking side will be left to battle against the Aviva Premiership new boys. But, despite some of the squad’s younger players having displayed a rawness in pre-season training, the 30-...

This is the sight that awaits Exeter Chiefs fans when they arrive at Sandy Park for the first game of the season next Saurday.

Work has been continuing late into the night to ensure the multi-miliion pound improvement works are complete.

The west stand has been extended, the east stand now has terracing and the pitch is a mixture of grass and a state-of-the art synthetic material.

Sandy Park will be one of the best stadiums in the Aviva Premiership thanks to the summer investment.

Big names join SW Tour of Britain

Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel are among the top cyclists confirmed to be competing in the Friends Life Tour of Britain, which starts on Sunday (7 September).

The race, which is Britain’s biggest free to watch sporting event, will return to Devon for Stage Five, hosted by Devon County Council and sponsored by South West Highways, on Thursday 11 September.

Defending champion Sir Bradley Wiggins will lead Team Sky's squad after winning the race in 2013. He will line up alongside fellow British riders Ian Stannard and Ben Swift as part of their six-man...

Pat Phibbs back at Sandy Park

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has confirmed Pat Phibbs is to return to the club on trial with immediate effect.

The Australian scrum-half signed for London Irish on a two-year deal in February 2013 but was released this summer after breaking a foot in pre-season last year.

However, pre-season knocks to Dave Lewis and Will Chudley have meant Baxter is keen to ensure there is sufficient cover for the start of the new Aviva Premiership season, which gets underway this Sunday with a trip to newly-promoted London Welsh (2pm).

Lewis is currently sidelined with an...
