Campaigners against proposed cuts to Devon County Council’s youth service have said they are considering legal action as they believe the authority may have violated international law.

The dispute came to a head last Thursday when 17-year-old campaigner Alfie Weaver was denied a chance to address the council at a meeting to set the council’s budget for 2014/15.

The budget included a reduction of nearly £1m to the council’s youth service which could potentially see the closure of the council’s youth centres after the completion of a consultation process.

Warning issued over carpet cleaning scam

Devon and Somerset Trading Standards are warning residents today to be aware of unscrupulous traders offering carpet cleaning services, following complaints from concerned consumers.

The traders, some of whom operate nationally, normally make initial contact by telephone, offering to clean carpets for a low or special price, often around £20 per room.

A card then arrives with a date for when the work will be carried out.

However, Trading Standards officers say that this just 'a foot in the door', and once in the house, the trader will say that they have found...

Organic veg farm sends food aid to flooded farmers and villagers in Somerset

Farmers and villagers stranded on the Somerset Levels are eating a little better this week, thanks to food aid delivered in the form of organic vegboxes from Riverford.

The villages of Muchelney and Thorney have been cut off by floods for almost nine weeks, with water over a metre deep in places.

It’s too much for the Riverford vans to cope with, but thanks to a Unimog operated by Suffolk Fire & Rescue, regular deliveries of organic fruit and vegboxes are making it through.

Riverford’s founding farmer, Guy Watson says:P “The belief that good food should be...

Behind closed doors at Knightshayes

From Saturday 1 March, the public are being given the chance to see behind closed doors at Knightshayes on the outskirts of Tiverton; as previously unseen kitchen areas are being opened up for the first time in over forty years.

Some of the areas being shown in the servant’s wing, known as the East Wing, have been shut off from the public since the house came into the care of the National Trust in 1972. Much of the space was converted into a two storey flat for Lady Joyce Amory, the championship winning golfer and last member of the family to live at Knightshayes; and when she died...

The landslip that closed the A377 Cowley Road running between Exeter and Credition on Friday afternoon has now been completely cleared and the road is fully open.

The road had been closed to ensure the safe removal of 400 tonnes of slippage material from the site which involved the use of heavy excavation and haulage plant.

The road closure had prevented bus services from serving stops between Cowley Bridge and Crediton, affecting the 50, 51, 315 and 377 stagecoach bus services. Everything is now back to normal.
