Ancient Rome Continues to Dictate the Plans of Exeter’s Grecians

Exeter is famed for its remarkably well-preserved collection of Ancient Roman architecture. The city continues to be surrounded by these historic works, and while they give Exeter a distinct feel and make it a huge attraction for visitors, it’s not uncommon for modernisation plans to run aground because of these sites.

Devon NHS wins wins award for Apprentices

A Devon NHS organisation has won an award for its work in promoting the recruitment of apprentices.

The Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning group (NEW Devon CCG) scooped the Education Training Skills (ETS) Large Employer of the Year Award at a ceremony at the Buckerell Lodge in Exeter on 4 March.

It was a double success for the NHS organisation on the night after Howard Stamp, acting safety systems officer with the nursing directorate, also won the ETS Apprentice of the Year for Outstanding Contribution Award.

Bridge demolition timelapse

The South Devon Link Road project team has released timelapse footage of some of the activity undertaken during recent engineering works.

The footage shows the removal of the old accommodation bridge, which was removed during the work over the Christmas holiday period.

Since the project began, timelapse footage has been gathered at locations along the 5.5 km route, and some of these cameras were temporarily relocated to capture the action during the Christmas works.

Exeter College celebrates 'Oustanding' from Ofsted

Exeter College students and staff are celebrating after being rated as outstanding by education inspectors. The college, which was also rated outstanding by Ofsted less than two years ago, has become the first college in Devon and Cornwall to reach the standard under a new ratings framework. It makes it the only education provider to gain this highest accolade in two different inspections in less than two years. Leading supermarkets and retailers have agreed to work with Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg as he prioritises the battle against alcohol related crime and misuse. They sat down for initial round table talks with Mr Hogg yesterday. They were able to discuss work they already do with local communities. Staff at Exeter’s John Lewis and Waitrose stores were delighted today after receiving an annual bonus worth 15% of their salaries - the equivalent to nearly 8 weeks of pay. Local people must say ‘Yes to Homes’ to repair the South West housing market according to a report by the National Housing Federation (NHF). The report by the NHF, an industry body which represents the providers of affordable housing in the UK, claims that a shortage of affordable homes resulting in rising house prices means that the South West housing market is now at ‘breaking point’. Young Farmers raise funds for flood victims

Young Farmers from across Devon and the rest of the country, have been working together to raise money and collect forage for farmers affected by the recent floods in the Somerset levels.

Culm Valley YFC raised over £200 from members' donations at their recent Tight and Bright disco, which is being sent to the affected Somerset farmers. Meanwhile, Honiton YFC raised £4,500 at the performance of their production Gogglebox and through an Auction of Promises, with half the money raised being donated to Somerset farmers and the other half to Diabetes UK.

Police appeal after gun sighting near Crediton

Police are appealing for witnesses to an alleged firearms incident which took place on Wednesday 5 March near Spreyton, Crediton. Shortly before 8am a black car, Vauxhall Corsa or similar model, with three men inside, was allegedly driving around a property near the village when one man got out and started walking around.
