Ancient Rome Continues to Dictate the Plans of Exeter’s Grecians

Exeter is famed for its remarkably well-preserved collection of Ancient Roman architecture. The city continues to be surrounded by these historic works, and while they give Exeter a distinct feel and make it a huge attraction for visitors, it’s not uncommon for modernisation plans to run aground because of these sites.

Almost 200 members of the public have signed up to be a part of this sponsored sleep out on Saturday 15th March at The Guildhall Shopping Centre, Exeter.

Event organiser, Sophie Hodge, says “we are overwhelmed by the support of the community. So many people have come together to make a difference in the lives of homeless young people and I just want to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to each of them.”

Exeter’s MP Ben Bradshaw has said that Devon County Council cuts are ' very short-sighted' and will lead "to more social problems down the line" today at a meeting with users of the Westside Youth centre on Merrivale Road

Funding boost for Seaton Jurassic

Seaton Jurassic, the new exciting visitor attraction for East Devon, received a massive boost today (7 March) with the award of a Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) grant of over £300,000.

ACE Grant for Pacific Collections at RAMM

A new grant from the Designation Development Fund will allow RAMM to develop its Pacific collections for the benefit of its audiences including families, students and academics.

Man charged for Church burglary

A 25-year-old man has been charged in connection with a burglary at Martin’s Church in Exminster shortly before Christmas. The church was broken into on 15 December 2013 and food was taken from the donation basket along with Christmas cards. An antique British Legion flag and kneeler were burned while damage was caused to storage cupboard locks and the sound system. Lewis Wilkinson, from Exminster, has been charged with burglary and criminal damage and remanded on bail to appear before Exeter Magistrates’ Court on 25 March 2014

The art work of seven Exeter School pupils has been chosen to appear in The Marle Gallery’s “Before They Were Famous” exhibition from 8 March to 5 April 2014.

Five current GCSE and A Level Art pupils and two former pupils have been given the opportunity to see their work hung in a professional gallery.

City Council to rebuild flood wall

A flood defence wall badly damaged by the recent floods in Topsham will be rebuilt by Exeter City Council after the Environment Agency would not commit to repairing it.

A large section of the wall by the River Exe at Bowling Green Marsh was damaged during the high tides and storm damage in January and February. The wall provides protection to the RSPB reserve at Bowling Green Marsh and a number of nearby properties and businesses. South West High streets are set to become ‘dementia friendly’ as several major retailers commit to offering their staff training to help those with the condition. The initiative launched by the Alzhiemer’s society will see staff at 60 Homebase and Argos stores as well as some branches of Marks and Spencer and Lloyds bank train to become ‘Dementia Friends’ who help people with dementia live more independently.
