Fab four tackle London Marathon for FORCE

FORCE will have four runners on the start line for this year’s London Marathon on Sunday (April 21).

Cat Moore, Becky Tydd, Ravi Poorun and Sean Schofield will be pounding the streets of the capital, all determined to raise as much money as they can for FORCE from this iconic event.

July 2023 was a life-changing period for Becky Tydd . She secured a ballot place for London after years of trying in the same month that she received a diagnosis of cancer.

Clampdown on illegal fishing continues

Environment Agency enforcement teams continued their clampdown on illegal fishing, issuing 90 offence notices for close season offences across England from the start of close season (15 March) to the end of May. Patrols focused on a range of illegal fishing – including close season offences and fishing without a valid rod licence.

‘Close season’ – which runs from 15 March to 15 June inclusive – is when coarse angling is suspended on rivers, streams and specified canals and stillwaters to protect spawning fish.

Exeter Family Friendly raise £2.5k

A team of executives from Exeter Family Friendly raised £2675 for Devon-based charity Rainbow Living after cycling 72 miles from Wellington to Salcombe.

Starting at 8:30am, Exeter Family’s Andy Chapman (CEO), Simon Philp, Paul Austin, Alan Ord and Adrian Hodgkinson crossed the finish line at 16:30pm, to raise money for the protection provider’s charity of the year.

New cycle shelter for RD&E staff

Staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital are now benefiting from improved cycling facilities to encourage them to get on their bikes and enjoy a greener and cheaper commute to work.

The hospital has just unveiled a new state of the art cycle shelter in the grounds of its Wonford site, just outside Bowmoor House. Traditional hiring methods still favoured

Whilst nearly two in five (39%) companies plan to ramp up hiring in the second half of 2015, new research from Robert Half UK reveals that HR directors still favour traditional methods of recruitment, such as job postings or enlisting a recruitment consultancy, over referrals and word of mouth to secure the strongest candidates. Members of the rail union have started to vote in a ballot on both strike action and action short of a strike of all First Great Western members over the threat to jobs and safety from the introduction of the new Hitachi Inter-City trains. To celebrate National Volunteering week, the team at A la Ronde, the quirky sixteen-sided house near Exmouth, presented three of its 200 volunteers with long service awards.

Peter Mitchell has been filling the house with music by volunteering to play piano on a regular basis, Maureen Cook has spent five years welcoming visitors and explaining about the house as a Room Guide. The Rusty Pig in Ottery St Mary is renowned for using locally sourced, ethically produced ingredients, especially when it comes to pork.

This year owner Robin Rea has taken on nine Oxford Sandy & Blacks. These lucky young pigs have a happy life ahead in a natural environment on a smallholding kept by Fresh & Green, the East Devon company that supplies the majority of the Rusty Pig’s vegetables and salad ingredients.

Michelmores Run raises more than £25k

Nearly 1,000 people took part in the 16th Michelmores Charity Run on 11 June, raising over £25,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support – and beating last year's fundraising total.

The fastest male was Owen Walpole who ran the distance in just 16 minutes and 6 seconds − followed in second place by James Denne who finished in 16 minutes and 15 seconds. Third place went to Michelmores' Nathaniel Lane who covered the course in 16 minutes and 55 seconds.

Dartmoor encourages play at Holne

The installation of a new Moorland Play Park in the Dartmoor village of Holne was celebrated recently at a packed community event.

Previous equipment had become very dilapidated and when this small rural parish needed to find a large sum to fund a new park – they asked Dartmoor National Park if it would be able to help.
