Bowel Cancer West is delighted to have been chosen as the Charity of the Year for Devon County Show, which takes place on Thursday 16th-Saturday 18th May at Westpoint, Exeter. Recognising how big the issue is of Bowel Cancer in the South West, the charity reckons it can give a World Record a run for its money, but attempting to create the World’s longest toilet roll chain!

Brian to tackle ultra-distance cycle race across America

An on-call firefighter at Danes Castle will be taking part in the Trans-America Bike Race in June 2018 to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity and Wooden Spoon Devon.

The race involves cycling 4,300 miles across 10 US states in around a month.

Brian Murray retired as Chief Fire Officer from Highlands and Islands Fire Service in 2010 after a 30-year career, having served in numerous brigades and at the Fire Service College.

This year’s Jolly Good Jaunt is fast approaching on Sunday 29th October. The sponsored walk is guaranteed to be lots of fun and for a very good cause. Much of the money raised will go towards funding the services at Honiton`s Kings House day centre.

The role provided by Day Care is invaluable. Operating on a Tuesday and Thursday, the centre enables patients to take part in a range of activities including crafting and chair-based exercises, a freshly cooked lunch (with veg grown from the garden) and the opportunity to enjoy a variety of different guest speakers and entertainment....

180 guests joined Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) for their Enchanted Ball at Exeter Castle. The event was sponsored by Equinix and Brewin Dolphin and hosted by celebrity gardener Toby Buckland.

Over £25,000 was raised at the event. This could pay for ELF’s counsellor for a whole year meaning that 300 families can get the advice and support they need during some of the most difficult times of their lives.

Local Vauxhall retailer, Eden Motor Group, recently brewed up a massive £15,200 for Macmillan Cancer Support after taking part in the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’. Eden Motor Group, with dealerships in Exeter, Honiton, Newton Abbot and Torquay, served up slices of cake and numerous cuppas on 29th September in order to raise much needed funds for the charity. What’s more, a group of brave men from the Eden dealership in Exeter were also stripped bare for the cause after having their legs waxed, and a senior member of the Eden management team also took part in an exercise bike marathon...

On 5th October, the finalists from the Devon Schools Choir Competition, run by La La Choirs, took centre stage at Southernhay URC and competed for a chance to perform in Exeter Cathedral at the annual sell out concert, CLIC for Christmas. Five choirs had been shortlisted and all the choirs at the final sang two songs each. Yet again, the standard was incredibly high, giving the judging panel a really hard time deciding between them.

Hospice is 'the happiest place I've ever worked'

Judith Harris-Deans from Exeter has been volunteering for local charity Hospiscare for the last six years, and describes it as “the happiest place I’ve ever worked.” Since 2012 Judith has been popping into Searle House in Exeter to support the fundraising team with donations administration.

Judith described her typical day: “I usually come in once a week, but it’s a flexible arrangement so if I can’t make it in it’s never a problem, I just let them know beforehand. Likewise, sometimes I will come in much more often during busy times, like Christmas, when the team needs extra help....

Alphington retirees Peter and Mary Collins began volunteering at the Hospiscare Warehouse Shop on Trusham Road when it very first opened in 2012. Every Friday, Peter would repair donated furniture ready for selling in the shops and Mary sorted bags of clothes, sizing them, putting them on hangers then onto racks for distribution.

Charity calls for volunteers to help with Santa Run

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is delighted to be one of the chosen charities for the Exeter City Community Trust Santa Run in Exeter on Sunday 3rd December, and is looking for volunteers to help marshal the event.

Volunteers would be needed from 8.00am – 10.30am on the day of the run which starts and finishes in Princesshay, so you can then continue the festive spirit with a bit of Christmas shopping at the Christmas market afterwards!

The Jolly Good Jaunt on Sunday 29th October will again give walkers the opportunity to take part and raise vital funds for local charity Hospiscare.

The continued success of the Jolly Good Jaunt owes much to the generous support of local businesses and groups including the Deer Park County House Hotel for the splendid venue, the Honiton Agricultural Association for the use of their showground, Denhay Farms, Devon Hog Roast & Tesco`s Honiton for the delicious lunch.
