Let there be light! Exeter Scientists urging us to Race for Life

This group of researchers from Devon are leading the way in transforming how cancers are detected and treated by harnessing the power of light.

The team, who receive funding through Cancer Research UK, are encouraging people to take part in Race for Life this summer and help fund more life-saving research.

Their innovative use of Raman Spectroscopy, which is based upon the interaction of light with the chemical bonds within a material, is forging a better understanding of treating cancers earlier.

Exeter-based charity ‘Ride On Cycling for All’, is delighted to be gifted a Voodoo Mountain bike making it the 6000th bike donated since the charity was formed.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) is partnering with St Margaret’s Hospice Care to offer a Christmas tree recycling service for households across Somerset.

Last Christmas, ‘treecyclers’ raised almost £8,000 for CHSW, which runs the Little Bridge House children’s hospice in North Devon, as well as Charlton Farm near Bristol, and Little Harbour in St Austell. This year, it is collecting real trees in even more locations in return for a donation.

An Exeter care home has opened an on-site charity shop for residents where they can buy their own clothes.

Tors’ Nik Naks at The Old Rectory was officially opened last week. The charity shop, which is based in a room inside the care home, stocks clothes, shoes, scarves, jewellery, and books.

Devon Air Ambulance (DAA) launched the Mishap Fashion range in the summer of 2022, taking on a pioneering approach to garments that charity shops would not typically resell. The charity has simply decided to ‘rebrand’ items that have a minor ‘mishap,’ such as a missing button, a broken zipper, or a dropped hem, which might otherwise be in particularly good condition.

Bishop Fleming employees raise over £4,500 for Devon charity

Employees at the Exeter and Torquay offices of leading audit, accountancy, tax and advisory firm Bishop Fleming have raised £4,505 for a Devon-based charity.

Earlier this year the two offices announced their partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust as their chosen charity of the year.
