How the right underwear can help you feel empowered

Often, underwear is seen as a practical choice and as an afterthought. No one sees it in your day-to-day life as it is hidden beneath layers of other clothing. But underwear can be the key to boosting your confidence and help empower you to tackle the day.

Let’s dive into the world of empowering lingerie and how to use it to enhance your self-image.

Feeling confident whilst comfortable

The wrong underwear can be a distraction throughout the day, so finding pieces that are comfortable as well as beautiful is important.

Feeling confident in your own skin...

How do cold callers get your number?

Doesn't it drive you mad when you repeatedly answer cold callers.

How do they get your number? It's baffling.

We are x-directory, but everytime we have moved house, the calls seem to come think and fast and continue for years!

Who is selling the phone numbers? Is it the estate agents? The removal company? The utility suppliers? It seems that the Data Protection Act is not worth the paper it's written on. I've just answered another call on my house phone from an 0208 London number.

"Hello, my name is Senil, how are you today Mrs E...

Awards for Devon engineering projects

Two Devon projects have been recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West.

The awards were presented at the ICE Annual Project of the Year Awards in Bristol.

The Community Award was presented to the Exe Estuary Trail project, a cycle and walking route that extends over 16 miles set within the beautiful and sensitive backdrop of the Exe Estuary, on Devon’s south coast. It was described by judges as ‘an excellent example of a civil engineering project which benefits the community in a number of ways’

This year the judges also felt that a very high...

I grew up in a society where our values – the principles which influence and shape our relationships – were determined in general by education. For my generation, the learning which took place at home, school, or in church and college, for example, was formative in developing who we have become as human beings. In this environment, we learned that personal bonds and friendships offered us boundaries in which we could give and take.

Furthermore, we were aware that who we were also partly determined who other people were too, whether in nearby communities or distant countries. We...

'Squeaky bum time' for BBC bosses

It’s going to be ‘squeaky bum time’ for the management team at BBC Radio Devon over the next few weeks.

After a week in which it took managing editor Mark Grinnell three days to respond to criticism over his decision to drop Judi Spiers from the station and more than 1,000 people taking to social media to complain about the move, he has let one of his big names go.

Bad move.

Judi will be replaced by David Fitzgerald, who is an experienced broadcaster and a jolly good chap.

However, he has a huge act to follow and a loyal audience to win over – those that are...

Don't panic Captain Grinnell!

Picture the scene…

As a management team you’ve had months to plan the departure of one of your radio station’s biggest stars.

Not only that she has served you for 15 years.

Not only that, you are the BBC.

Smooth, slick, organised, disciplined, measured, understanding conciliatory.

All the things you’d expect. Except that didn’t happen!

Instead there was, in the words of one insider, “pandemonium”.

I have been told that the BBC Radio Devon executive team simply were not prepared for the volume of calls and emails they received after...

Has Radio Devon lost the plot?

What on earth is going on at BBC Radio Devon?

In January, breakfast show presenter Matt Woodley’s services were dispensed with and now it emerges station stalwart Judi Spiers has been given the boot.

The moves obviously make sense to station bosses but, to the outsider, it appears to be sheer madness.

Judi’s show was incredibly popular with listeners – testament to that the huge volume of calls, emails and texts she received every day.

She was also one of the few presenters to spare time to host events and put her name to charity efforts.

But after...

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has” I’ve been reflecting on this famous though underrated quote from anthropologist Margaret Mead in regard to recent events, including the General Election. One of the weaknesses in our embryonic democracy is that we seek to elect people to represent us but often let them get on with it until we are called to express our choices at the next round of voting. Most of us do not seem to engage with politicians for much of the time and effectively do not take our own...

How to avoid getting locked out of your car

As someone who recently got locked out of my still running car (yes that’s right it was still running), I completely understand the panic that fills your world when you get locked out your car on a cold February morning, with your life belongings tucked away inside, and a highly important meeting looming at 9AM.

We all think it won’t happen to us, until one day it actually happens to us, and there you find yourself frantically awakening half the neighbourhood to try and get access to a phone. So what you do want to do is take some preventative measures to avoid this happening....

To Vote or not to Vote?

After observing the unedifying General Election campaign nationally and being involved in several local Hustings, I have to honestly say I am feeling very uninspired and pretty low about the overall state of English politics. In my view, we face an unprecedented global ecological challenge and a menacing destabilisation of democracy. Together these two call for an intense campaign to de-carbonise as soon as possible on the one hand, and a profound and radical overhaul of our political and economic systems and structures on the other. This means we need to set out detailed programmes to...

10 everyday things invented by accident

Almost all popular inventions today were created by scientists who had a very specific idea and went on to materialize it. To invent something, you have to go through a series of experiments with different calculations. However, in some cases experiments can go wrong, resulting in you creating something you never intended to make – a great product. Everyone on this list may not be a scientist, or even successful at what they do, but they had enough luck to create products that we simply can’t live without .

Towards the end of the 19th century, an...
