Upper Sixth biologists from Exeter School took part in a DNA and Gene Technology workshop run by team of bioscientists from Exeter University.

Sixth Former Rebecca Charman explained how they carried out a restriction digest, using highly precise micropipettes to add restriction endonuclease to samples of real human DNA in order to split the DNA structure into tiny fragments.

"We then used gel electrophoresis - a technique we have recently studied as part of our A Level syllabus - to separate the fluorescently labelled fragments based on their size.

"It was particularly fascinating to be able to carry out such complex reactions at a molecular level, highlighting the precision and accuracy involved in genetic research, and enabling us to apply our A Level knowledge in a practical way.

"From a career point of view, it was invaluable to be able to spend time with experienced researchers, who were able to open our eyes to the exciting opportunities offered by a career in scientific research. A huge thank you goes to John and his team on behalf of all the Upper Sixth biologists."
