If like the majority of college students going into their final year you have been faced with the mammoth task of applying to university, making a decision when it comes to choosing just five universities that you’d like to apply for can understandably be really tough. With so many universities offering loads of benefits and great stuff for their students, picking just five can be tricky – and there is a lot for you to take into consideration. Whilst you’re thinking about predicted grades, the degree course that you’d like to apply for, and how far away from your parental home you’d like to move, there’s also another factor you’d be wise to think about – crime rates.

Crime and Students

Although going to university is a really exciting experience, each year many students have what should be the best few weeks of their lives ruined by criminals. Although the crime rate amongst students themselves is pretty low, many university cities have gangs of thieves who target students – especially during fresher’s week, when students are drinking and having a good time, and guards are low. If staying safe when you go to university is a priority, you’d be wise to look at the crime rates for the different cities you are considering moving to.

Highest and Lowest

To give you an idea of where the best and worst places to go to uni are when it comes to crime rates, music students at the RNCM in Manchester city centre are likely to have to put up with the most crime, whilst students at the University of Buckingham can enjoy a relatively safe environment with the lowest crime rate. The University of Exeter is a popular destination for many students, and they also enjoy a pretty low crime rate, with a score of just 20.68 compared to Manchester’s 39.13.

Why Choose Exeter University?

Along with the relatively low crime rate, the University of Exeter is also a great choice as it ranks quite highly at number ten on the 2016 University League Tables. The university also has a number of glowing reviews from current and past students that you can read here. It is a vibrant university with a beautiful campus, and there is also a lot going on that students can take part in, and of course great nightlife.

Staying Safe

Whether you choose to attend the University of Exeter or decide to go somewhere else, staying safe at home, on campus, and when you’re out should be a top priority. Don’t display valuables, and always make sure your doors and windows are shut and locked (check out metrolocks.co.uk for secure locking solutions) if you leave your accommodation. Even if you’re living in student halls with extra security, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, and you will develop good habits for the second and third years where you may choose to live in a student house.

If you’re thinking of applying to Exeter University this year, we wish you the best of luck with your application – whatever you choose to study!
