Towards the Brazilian Exhibition at St James’ Park

In the summer of 1914, Exeter City Football Club became the first English team to embark on a tour of South America. The tour involved playing five matches in the Argentine and three in Brazil, including the honour of playing the first ever Brazilian national team.

Later this year Exeter City FC begins to celebrate the centenary of the tour and as part of the preparations the Supporters’ Trust ‘Community’ working group, with help from the University of Exeter, are archiving text, photographs and film to form part of an exhibition to be held at St James’ Park.

Kiera Gould is co-ordinator of this project, which is fully funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. If you are interested in how the work is progressing, a blog has been set up at exetertour1914.wordpress.com, where you can sign up for email updates and leave comments.

The team would also be pleased to hear from you if you have any information or family history relating to the tour.

Ensuring the Future of our Club’s Rich Heritage

You might also be interested in checking out exetertimetrails.wordpress.com - another project in which the Supporters’ Trust are actively involved.

Primarily a Royal Albert Memorial Museum project, led by Professor Gabriella Giannachi and post-grad student, Will Barrett from the University of Exeter, it details the progress being made towards archiving Exeter’s history with the aim of creating an app allowing users to generate trails in time using items and locations from RAMM’s ‘tours in Devon’.

Members of the Supporters’ Trust Community Group are helping with the history of the club, and the blog currently includes articles on Exeter City FC and the formation of the Supporters’ Trust.

Although these are both individual projects in their own right, they are overarched by the historical project ‘Grecian Voices’. This aims to regain as much of Exeter City FC’s history as possible, be that artefact, photos and documents or memories, for future generations.

Again, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Supporters’ Trust are working with the RAMM, the University of Exeter Library Archivist and University students, to catalogue and digitise information, which will culminate in a permanent interactive exhibition at St James’ Park.

The project began with a documentary (available on the website) and the installation of artwork portraying iconic players and managers in the Centre Spot Bar. The website, www.grecianvoices.com is regularly updated as new information is acquired If you would like to help with this project in any way, please see the website for details.
