Exeter City triumph in korfball derby against Exeter Uni

Saturday 8th December 2012 saw Exeter’s first local korfball match with Exeter City playing Exeter University in the South West Korfball League.

The league includes teams from Taunton, Bristol and Gloucester, but Saturday saw an all-Exeter line up. The clubs first and second teams came together at Wonford sports centre for two back to back matches. The second teams played first and the skill of the City team soon became apparent with a succession of almost answered goals and a lead of 8-1 at half time.

The Uni team fought back strongly to score several quick goals after the break, but these were swiftly matched by City to give a final score of 15-8 to Exeter City. The first team match followed a similar pattern, with City always several goals ahead. The Uni never gave up and gave a good performance for a highly enjoyable game. The final score was 11-5 to City.

Overall the experience of Exeter City dominated over the energy and enthusiasm of the students. The University korfball club has only been running for three years, and this is the first year that they have fielded a team in the South West league. In contrast Exeter City have been playing for 10 years and will be celebrating this anniversary with a series of events in January 2013.

This includes an introductory session on Jan 8th, where all are welcome to come and try their hand at the sport. For more details see www.exeterkorfball.co.uk. This latest win puts Exeter City’s second team at the top of the South West division 2 league table as they have been undefeated in all their 5 games so far this season. Next weekend Exeter City take on another team of students, Bristol University, and are confident of another two good wins.
