Exeter School equestrian team has secured its place in the National Finals at Hickstead.

A team of four pupils from Exeter School came joint first in a National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) competition at Bicton Arena on Saturday 21 January, beating over 50 competitors.

The 90/95cm team, comprised of Olivia Eden, Celia Nowill, Emily Rix and Alice Bailey, now look forward to competing in the National Finals at Hickstead on the weekend of 28 May.

The NSEA competition at Bicton was open to all schools in Devon and Cornwall. The course was made up of show jumps and simulated cross country fences which is run on an optimum time. Penalties are incurred if competitors go over or under the allotted time, knock down poles, have refusals or fall off!

Team manager, Alison Bailey, said the equestrian team is going from strength to strength thanks to the support and help of the school and parents.

"The children have worked really hard to achieve this and deserve their success. Hickstead will be a fantastic experience that will stay with them forever. I wish them lots of luck for their forthcoming competition!"

The team finished on 5 penalty points which was enough to secure them joint first place. The school's 80cm team comprised of Alice Bailey, Olivia Eden, Eliza Heard and Celia Nowill finished in a very credible sixth place.

Individually Emily came fourth, Alice seventh and Celia eighth. Emily Rix and Sophie Walker also took part in the metre class and Emily ended up fourth individually.

Last year, the 90cm equestrian team reached the National Championships at Addington.
