Seven year old Aidan Bown was “transported back in time”, with a ride on a 1966  London Transport Vintage Routemaster, as part of his prize for winning a competition to design a poster.

The Woodbury C of E Primary School pupil won the school drawing competition launched earlier this year during Catch the Bus Week, which is co-ordinated by the Greener Journeys sustainable travel campaign and supported by Devon County Council and Stagecoach South West.

Primary schools across Devon were invited to design a poster telling people why it is best to catch the bus.

Stagecoach kindly provided the vintage bus for the day, treating Aidan and his classmates to a bus ride to their chosen day out at Stover Country Park, near Newton Abbot.

Year Two pupil Aidan said: “I was really surprised to win the competition because lots of children at different schools could enter. I really enjoyed being taken on the trip with my class, travelling on a vintage bus to Stover Park.”

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “Thanks must go to all of the children who took part in the poster competition – we received some excellent entries and it really got pupils thinking about the benefits of catching a bus and using sustainable transport instead of the car. Aidan’s design was superb, and his prize was a really a memorable day out for him and his schoolmates. By working closely with Stagecoach, and our other partners, we can hopefully encourage more people to try sustainable travel and help tackle congestion on our roads.”

Helen Scholes, of Stagecoach South West, commented: "I was really impressed at the standard of entries received and it was very difficult to decide on an overall winner. We ended up selecting Aidan's entry because we all felt 'The environment drives my future' was a very clever way of summarising the importance of using sustainable transport. I'd also like to thank everyone who entered for the work they put into their designs - they were really inspiring."

There were also three runners up in the competition who each received a book token. All of the winning and runner-up designs will be displayed inside Stagecoach buses across the Devon network.
