This week an ambitious four month event called ‘Framing the view’ launched at Killerton National Trust estate, near Exeter.

Twelve installations, a number of which have been designed and built by Killerton’s talented ranger team, are placed around the parkland and garden to highlight the best views and tell the story behind the people who once owned, designed and painted the picturesque landscape.

Visitors will stumble upon a giant picture frame, a high seat, tourist telescope, easels and art supplies to show off Killerton’s picturesque views in a different way.

Helen Trebble, Killerton’s outdoor engagement officer said: “There is also a traveler’s trunk brimming with period costumes for visitors to model themselves on the romantic landscape portraits of the early nineteenth century. We want visitors to climb into the giant picture frame and photograph their own modern day masterpiece or selfie and share it with us.”

Helen continued: “All selfies captured in the landscape and shared with us will be added to a huge mosaic of visitor’s photos. Over the coming months, these will build up into one collaborative piece of art, on public display at Killerton until September.”

To take part, visit Killerton, choose your favourite view, snap your selfie and post it to Killerton’s facebook, twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #framingtheview. With permission, Killerton will share selfies online and print them for the Framing the View giant mosaic on display.

Killerton’s Lead Ranger Ed Nicholson said: “We are leading a huge parkland restoration programme at Killerton which involves rediscovering lost features and hidden views.”

Framing the View playfully extends inside the House where visitors will find a fine art exhibition of picturesque watercolours that originally influenced and inspired the Aclands to shape Killerton’s landscape into what we see today.

Framing the view is open daily until 13 September. Normal admission fees apply. For information about Framing the View, visit nationaltrust.org.uk/Killerton.
