Young cyclists have the opportunity to take part in a Go Ride Racing cyclo-cross event for beginners on Saturday (27 September).

The event at Mincinglake Valley Park in Exeter is an opportunity for young people aged from seven to 16 years old to get their first taste of one of the nation’s fastest growing cycling disciplines, cyclo-cross.

Cyclo-cross events are multi-lap races of a set course that includes obstacles, such as hurdles or sand pits, which mean riders need to dismount and run with their bike.

The entry-level Go-Ride Racing event will be hosted by British Cycling trained coaches and is supported by Devon County Council and Exeter City Council.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for cycling, said: “Following all of the excitement of the Devon Stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race, it’s wonderful that young people in Devon can have a go at cyclo-cross. This is a great chance for youngsters to give this fun and exciting sport a try. It’s in a traffic-free environment, and first timers who may be new to cyclo-cross can simply bring along a mountain bike, a helmet and £5 entry fee and take part – it’s as simple as that.”

Councillor Emma Morse, Devon County Councillor for Pinhoe and Mincinglake, said: “Cycling is continuing to gain in popularity in Devon and we are pleased to be working again with Exeter City Council and British Cycling to deliver this exciting event. Hopefully this will encourage more young people to cycle and use the many cycle paths and trails in Exeter.”

Keith Owen, lead City Councillor for Environment, Health and Wellbeing, said: "We are delighted to co-operate with this event, which is yet another opportunity for young people in Exeter to participate in sport. It helps us achieve our objective of making Exeter the most active city in the South West."

British Cycling also has a limited number of bikes available to use, which must be booked in advance.

The event costs £5 per rider. Registration opens at 10am and the racing starts at 11am, at the Sylvania Community Centre, Mincinglake Valley Park, Exeter, EX4 7DR.
