An energy efficient council has been recognised for its ambition, commitment and innovation at a national awards ceremony.

Exeter City Council won the Best Public Sector Energy Management Award at the Public Sector Sustainability Awards.

The award follows the success of a range of energy efficient and renewable initiatives and a further programme of ground-breaking renewable projects to be introduced by the City Council. The local authority has installed solar panels on top of the Civic Centre and other buildings, as well as fitting low energy LED lights throughout its offices and car parks.

Cllr Ollie Pearson, Lead Councillor for Enabling Services, said: "This is great national recognition of the work being carried by the authority.

"Not only are we leading the way in energy conservation but we are providing valuable financial savings at a challenging time for the Council. The work of the Council's new Energy Team deserves the greatest recognition for the ongoing work.

"With rising fuel prices and the challenges posed by man-made climate change, energy management and our aspiration for energy neutrality is extremely important and will provide for long term energy resilience."
