The taste of Italy has arrived in Ottery St Mary courtesy of the Rusty Pig.

Chef Robin Rea has installed a pizza oven at the popular Yonder Street restaurant to provide diners with a delicious alternative to his artisan fare.

“Each pizza will be freshly made using locally-sourced ingredients, as with all the food we prepare,” explained Robin.

“As much of the pizza as possible will be seasonal including the sauce, so we won’t be serving up a traditional Margherita. We have also been experimenting with dessert pizzas – chocolate and marshmallows recently went down well with a group from Ottery Primary School.”

Robin says he is so impressed with results from the oven that he is thinking of renaming the restaurant as ‘Maiale Arrugginitio’ – the Italian version of Rusty Pig. “It has something of a ring to it,” he pronounced, tongue firmly in cheek.

To celebrate the new oven, Robin is holding a fundraising ‘Pig Out Pizza’ and quiz night on February 6 for charity of the year, Devon Freewheelers. To book, call 01404 815580
