Football legends Ian Wright and Alan Shearer became Exeter Hospiscare supporters during their fleeting visit to the city covering Exeter City’s amazing draw with Liverpool.

The BBC commentators both took rides with city firm Apple Central Taxis which is donating 20p to Exeter Hospiscare for each taxi booking that it receives from any Exeter city or district hotel.

“We took both Ian and Alan to and from the Southgate Hotel during the evening and to the railway station in the morning, so together they donated a total of £1.20 to Exeter Hospiscare!” said Steve Screech, general manager.“They were both lovely guys who gave our drivers photos and autographs.”

Apple Central Taxis has a fleet of more than 200 cars and more than 400 accounts and will be running this special fundraising promotion until June.

“We want to take an active part in the community and this is our way of doing that. When I had a tour of the hospice I just thought, what a fantastic charity this is,” said Steve. “We are delighted to be supporting Exeter Hospiscare.

" We’ve had a great start with bookings for the New Year festivities and we’ve had a very positive response from many local hotels. We’ve already taken 171 bookings for the Southgate Hotel. We are hoping to raise as much cash as possible for this great cause.”

Exeter Hospiscare provides free expert care and support for hundreds of city patients and their families. It costs £6m a year to provide a wide variety of hospice services, in Exeter, East and Mid Devon, with £1.25m funded by the NHS and the rest by fundraising events, community and business support, Hospiscare retail services, grants and gifts in wills.
