Scores of Exmouth residents are learning more about East Devon’s new improved recycling collection service due to start in the town from mid-February through a series of information days which continue through this month and into January.

The information events are a great opportunity to find out more about the new service where householders will be able to recycle additional items such as cardboard, mixed plastics, cartons and small electrical goods which will be collected every week.

The next information day is on Saturday December 10 at Exmouth Market in The Strand where East Devon District Council recycling officers will be on hand to explain the changes coming up and answer questions from householders.

From February, each household in Exmouth will receive an additional 75 litre reusable sack for their extra recycling which they can use alongside their green recycling box and blue food caddy. These containers will be collected from the kerbside every week, and with more recycling and less bulky waste being thrown away, residents’ grey wheeled waste bins, will be collected every three weeks.

Early in the New Year, all households in the Exmouth area will receive, through the post, vital information about the new service including the start date, a recycling and waste collection calendar, a list of the items they can recycle and tops tips on how they can recycle more.

Information days are being held on:

  • Saturday December 10 at Exmouth Market in The Strand from 9am to 4.30pm
  • Monday December 12 at Exmouth Town Hall from 10am to 4pm
  • Wednesday January 4 at Imperial Rec (Christmas tree shredding event) from 8.30am to 2pm
  • Saturday January 14 at Magnolia Walk Shopping Centre from 10am to 5pm
  • Monday January 30 at Brixington Parade 10 till 5.30pm (TBC)

The new service is being introduced in two separate phases across East Devon next year – firstly in the Exmouth area in February and then to the rest of the district from June. The council’s extensive public awareness campaign to explain the new service to residents, also includes a series of posters and banners which have appeared across the Exmouth area, in halls and shops, the library and schools, inviting residents to ‘Watch this Space’ and learn more about the extra items they can recycle when the great new service is introduced.

Residents have been asking the council, through surveys, to help them recycle more and waste less for some time now and last year more than 1300 households in Exmouth (The Colony) and new Feniton trialed the new service. The trials proved so successful, that residents asked for the service to continue in these areas.

The Mundy household in Exmouth were among the households who took part in the trial and mum Kara is a keen supporter of the changes which she says means she can recycle more and waste less.

Kara, who has two young children Charlie and Leo, said:  “I’ve become a recycling convert! We can recycle so much more and it’s collected weekly. I can easily put the lid down on my wheelie bin now – and that’s after three week’s worth of rubbish. It’s absolutely fine.

“People may say that being able to recycle cardboard and waste shouldn’t make this much difference – but it does. There’s so much cardboard and plastic in packaging these days. I love the new service and I don’t want it to go back to how it was before.”

Cllr Iain Chubb, the council’s portfolio holder for the Environment, said that the two information events already held in the town had been very popular.

“The people we have spoken to have been 100% positive about the new service and are looking forward to being able to collect more recycling which will be collected weekly.

“Talking to our team seems to have really helped householders as they prepare for when the new service starts in Exmouth in February and I would recommend that residents go along to these events to find out more.

“We are here to help our residents through these changes and we will have a dedicated team of officers who will be out on the streets of our district giving advice and assisting wherever they can when the service begins.”

Information on the new service is available on the council’s website – eastdevon.gov.uk/onboard – and if you want to be kept up to date on when your new collections are, download the council’s really useful smart phone app which will send reminders about your collection days tailored to your own address. The East Devon mobile app is free and is available to download from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
