Once you have decided you are going to sell your home, don’t you just wish you could fast forward to the moment you are sat in your new house with a glass of wine and a takeaway? But, unfortunately, you can’t and the first and arguably highest hurdle you need to get over is actually selling your current home - which can be much easier said than done.

Your house can be on the market for months and months – you might not even know why, so what can you do about it? Well, you could really speed up the process by filling your details into the valuation form on We Buy Any House and waiting 24 hours for an offer and you could do some home DIY to increase the selling power of your home – or you could do both!

But, where do you start?

The garden
The garden is probably the best place to start because, as well as increasing the selling power of your home, it will also add value. It is easy to forget about the outside, but this is actually the first thing a potential buyer will see. If it is overgrown, messy and full of dead plants this will be their impression of the whole house – so spend some time outside and tidy it up.

Firstly, mow the lawn, cut back the bushes and plant some brightly coloured flowers. Next you want to ensure it is a place the potential buyer can imagine spending a summer evening with friends – so give the old furniture and plant pots a lick of paint and accessorise the space with fairy lights, candles, cushions and mirrors – to give it a real cosy feel.

A lick of paint
A fresh lick of paint on doors and walls will make your home seem lighter and bigger. Go for neutral colours, so it is easy for potential buyers to see how they would re-decorate to their taste. You might like bright colours and patterns, but if the buyer doesn’t, this could be off putting. Plus, neutral colours will enable buyers to move in and use the room straight away without having to decorate first.

Make minor repairs
A hole in the wall, cracked tiles, threadbare carpet – these issues are easily sorted out, but can be incredible off putting to a potential buyer who wants to be able to move into a new property without having loads of unnecessary DIY to do themselves.

Create storage
Create clever storage solutions like the suggestions in this Buzzfeed post and hang shelves and cupboards – that way if they go to open a door to see what storage is on offer, everything you have stuffed in won’t fall out. Plus, storage is incredibly appealing as it makes even the smallest of homes seem much bigger.

Update the lightning
A poorly lit room will make it seem dull and dreary, whilst the light fixture itself could have become dated. So, get rid of these and swap them for modern lighting, which is stylish whilst brightening up the room.

DIY is the easiest way of increasing the selling power of your home, get the paintbrush and the power drill out this weekend and enhance your space for buyers to peruse and fall in love with.
