Dressing for a snow holiday

Summer is just around the corner, but not all of us are sun-loving lizards, are we? If the thought of sweltering in a heatwave and getting greasy in a puddle of factor 30 isn’t your idea of a good time, why not book yourself a holiday in colder climes? Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding or just exploring a frozen city on foot, here’s everything you’re going to need to pack in your snowy suitcase…

Items to layer: The key to packing for a snow holiday is to recognise that bigger isn’t necessarily better, and by that, we mean that padded clothing isn’t the most sensible way to dress yourself. Of course, a proper jacket is vital, but the rest of your clothes should be thin and layer-able. So, opt for tops and leggings that are lightweight, quick to dry and easily worn on top of one another. This will trap in layers of heat to the degree that you need, and also means that you can cool down at a safe rate if you get a bit sweaty on a hike!

Thermal trousers and tops: If where you’re heading is really cold, thermals are a great idea. Thermal tops and leggings (or tights) can be worn between your standard underwear and normal garments, and many snowy holiday-goers also wear thermals to bed… especially if they’re camping in the wilderness! Just avoid cotton if you’re doing strenuous physical activity like skiing or snowboarding as a material like this will retain too much moisture to feel comfortable.

A warm jacket: A good quality winter jacket is essential if you want to enjoy being outdoors! A soft-shell jacket is a good place to start as it will repel light snow and rainfall as well as wind chill on freezing cold slopes. In a very cold, dry weather, ‘down’ ski jackets (made with 50% natural goose or duck down) will keep you toasty. But, if you don’t need something so high-tech but do want to look good, consider men’s coats from Superdry. Despite what their name suggests, these coats aren’t just for boys… fleece lined with a hoody and finished with ribbed cuffs, a man’s jacket will make you look extra cute and feminine - as if you’ve borrowed your boyfriend’s!

Hats and gloves: Without a doubt, a decent pair of gloves and a winter hat is must-have for a snow holiday! A faux fur headband will keep you looking glamorous without having to sacrifice any of your precious body heat.

Decent boots: If you’re going to be walking on surfaces that are mostly very icy, you need to find a shoe with an outsole that is relatively soft with maximum tread. Unfortunately, this means your beloved leather-soled shoes are out of the question! Instead, pack a decent pair of walking boots for excursions, and opt for boots like these that are practical but fashionable for city breaks and socialising.

And, finally, don’t forget to pack a few snowy holiday essentials… a moisturiser for your hands and face will feel like a godsend when your skin starts flaking, and a good quality lip balm will prevent you picking at chapped lips.
