Exeter School's library celebrated its 10th anniversary with a poetry event to tie in with National Poetry Day and 400 years of Shakespeare on Tuesday 4 October.

The School House Library, named after its origins as the boarding accommodation (dormitories and studies, called study row) when the school accepted boarders, was the venue for pupils, staff, guests, Governors and alumni to enjoy refreshments and tours by pupil guides which showcased the library's extensive facilities.

President of the School Library Association, Kevin Crossley-Holland, declared Exeter School library as his favourite school library in the foreword of the anniversary souvenir programme.

The well-known poet and prize-winning author for children said that the School House Library was a powerhouse at the heart of the school's life and learning.

Over 50 guests enjoyed poetry readings by guest professional poets and former Exeter School teachers Lawrence Sail (1982 -1991) and Harry Guest (1972 - 1991).

The audience was entertained by a delightful selection of their poetry interspersed with recitations by pupils and staff. Musical interludes expertly provided by Sixth Formers Charlie Austin, Sophia Marshall and Tobias Ashdown, accompanied by Music teacher Tina Guthrie, further added to the ambience.
Congratulations to the four winners of the English Department Third Form Poetry Competition who excelled themselves with expressive readings of their poems on the theme of 'Messages' and who were awarded book token prizes at the end of the evening: Freddie Bennett, Sophia Bosch, Zac Brown and Daniel Dale.

Representing Sixth Form, Catherine Eyre read 'Ozymandias' by Shelley with poise and the Lawrence Sail Poetry Prize winner, Fourth Former Katie Ledger, read one of her thought provoking poems with feeling.  English teacher Kat Ridler-Murray gave an inspiring rendition of 'On the Sea' by Keats.
New displays, including wonderful, eye-catching artwork provided by the Art Department, marked the special occasion.

Librarian Liz Taylor said that poet Lawrence Sail compèred the evening's entertainment most effectively.

"Thank you to our guest speakers, the Alumni Office and all the many teaching, support staff and pupils involved in making this celebration so special," she said.
