Old Maynardian, Diana Swayne took a trip down memory lane this week to visit the school she attended in the 1930s.

The sprightly centenarian from Crediton, who will celebrate her 100th birthday on 29 October, dropped in for tea and cake with the Headmistress and took the time to meet other members of staff and the Head Girl.

“It was a much starker place when I was here,” she announced. “It seems so totally different now, a much happier and friendlier place and everyone is smiling.”

“My time at school must have done me good, however, as I am still a student today,” she added. “Until recently I was going to art classes and I’d have carried on but the teacher has moved away from the area. You’re never too old to learn!

“My message to all young girls and boys is not to worry too much about success. I was never top of the class at school but I’m writing my third book now, I paint a lot and keep myself happily busy. When you’re young it’s important to remember that there’s still plenty of years left in life to find your niche.”
