Hay lorry hits railway bridge in Exeter

Alphington Road was closed this afternoon after a lorry carrying bales of hay collided with the railway bridge.

Police were informed at 2.05pm (Tuesday 23 August) of a road traffic collision on Alphington Road, the A377, in Exeter involving a single vehicle.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area due to tailbacks.

A spokesman for Devon & Cornwall Police said: "A lorry carrying hay passed under the railway bridge near County Tyres but en route through collided with the bridge. Some of the load spilled on the road and the rest of the load was deemed unstable."

A telehandler attended to assist with clearance, and polce are in attendance.

Network Rail also attended the scene to assess the condition of the railway bridge.

No injuries are reported and the road was cleared and reopened by 8pm.
