The latest group of young people in Devon have taken part in a Rugby World Cup Legacy programme.

The Business Empowering Employment Programme (BEEP) gives 16-24 year olds the confidence and skills to secure jobs and training opportunities.

Eight youngsters have completed an initial two-week course run by Motiv-8sw and were presented with their certificates at a celebration event on Friday (Oct 21) by radio and television broadcaster Judi Spiers.

They also worked with Exeter Chiefs’ players during the course, as they built their confidence and developed new skills.

Judi said: “It’s extraordinary what is being achieved. When people care and want to make a positive difference it’s phenomenal. I urge more businesses to get involved and support BEEP. I didn’t know much about it but meeting the young people today has been incredibly moving. They are brave and determined to get on in life, and as a local community we should do all we can to help them.”

The first stage of the programme has focused on developing self-esteem, confidence, motivation, communication, presentation skills and teamwork, whilst each person has also been supported to develop their own action plan and start working towards achieving their goals.

Now, participants will move on to work with mentors from local businesses, supporting them as they progress, for example applying for jobs.

The programme was initially launched by Exeter City Council, as part of the Rugby World Cup 2015 Legacy Programme, but has now been expanded, to support more young people across Devon.

Chelsea Kylie-Dover, 19, who was on the course, wants to become a mechanic and has already secured an interview for a potential apprenticeship.

“I didn’t want to do it but gave it a go. I have done other courses but nothing like this. The teaching was brilliant. They listened and treated us as individuals. It’s covered so much. Now I have a plan about what I’m going to do next.”

Also completing the course was Jose Antonio, 19.

He said: “We worked hard, worked together as a group and really supported each other. It has helped with my communication and confidence. Going to Sandy Park and meeting the Exeter Chiefs was really good.”

Exeter Chiefs Matt Jess and Julian Salvi have shown their support by becoming BEEP ambassadors.

Matt, said: “BEEP does fantastic work to support young people across Devon, and their track record is incredible. The more businesses that can get involved, offering mentors, venues and funding, the more of our young people we can help realize their ambitions.”

Sandra Sampson a trustee of the charity, helps to run the programme.

She said: “The young people have often been out of work or education for some time and have lost their confidence. BEEP works to turn that around, teaching them skills, building their confidence and self-esteem.”
