Devon Maritime Forum looks at future management of coast and seas

The summer meeting of the Devon Maritime Forum on Thursday (30 June) will serve as a timely opportunity to look at the future of managing coasts and seas following the recent EU referendum.

"Brexit: What now for our marine environment and maritime economy?" is the theme of the meeting at the Robbins Conference Centre, University of Plymouth, which will be a chance to start discussions on the way forward from here.

The meeting will enable representatives from different sectors to identify and discuss areas of conflict and common ground.

The Forum will continue with its commitment to a shared vision which sustainably develops marine resources, creating jobs and protecting valuable natural and cultural heritage, while working together to address the issue of climate and coastal change.

Professor Ed Maltby, Chairman of the Devon Maritime Forum, said: “This is a very significant moment for the maritime sector, as we face the prospect of a new legislative landscape and relationship with our maritime neighbours. So it is precisely at this time, therefore, that we need to restate our collective commitment to common goals and co-operative working to balance economy, environment and society.

“As a sector and a region, it will be imperative that we are strategically positioned to meet the challenges ahead and capitalise on the opportunities that will present themselves over the coming months and years. It is crucial that we have a clear vision of how we can grow the blue economy, protect our precious marine environment, and build greater community resilience against coastal and climate change.”

Key national marine and coastal figures will provide an overview of current priorities and future challenges in their respective sectors, including Charles Randall, of the UK Marine Industries Alliance, and Dr Anthony Firth, an expert in Maritime Heritage and member of Historic England’s Advisory Committee.

A regional overview will also be given by Professor Martin Attrill, from the Devon Local Nature Partnership, Amanda Ratsey, from the HotSW Local Enterprise Partnership, and Jim Portus, for the South West Fish Producers Organisation.
