A football club that offers adults with disabilities the chance to get involved in the beautiful game has received a cash boost for new kits courtesy of a leading UK housebuilder.

Exeter City Ability Counts FC has been handed a £1,000 grant thanks to Persimmon Homes South West’s Community Champions scheme, which has seen over £400,000 donated nationally this year.

The South West branch of the business, based in Exeter, has £2,000 to give away each month courtesy of the initiative.

Will Allan, Ability Counts chairman, said: “The club is in jubilant mood since Persimmon Homes South West announced they would be supporting our adult disability football teams through their Community Champions programme.

“Our Ability Counts teams are part of Exeter City FC’s Football in the Community programme which delivers inspiring physical activity, education, health and wellbeing programmes and courses across Devon.

“This vital funding will enable us to create a new team, supply playing strips and equipment to all the players and provide transport to Ability Counts tournaments.”

The self-funded club has already raised over £1,300 through a range of activities such as match day bucket collections, bag packing at supermarkets and club raffles.

Will added: “A contribution of this kind means we can meet the needs of our existing players and provide additional opportunities for participation in disability football in the local area. We can’t thank Persimmon enough for their fantastic support.”

Nina Hester, sales and marketing director at Persimmon Homes South West, said: “Exeter City FC and their Ability Counts teams have displayed a great amount of dedication to the local community.

“The club is of great value to the local area and we wanted to support them in any way we could.

“As always it was a difficult decision to select our Community Champions but I would encourage any charity or organisation that missed out this time, even if they have won previously, to apply again.”
