A TIVERTON company has raised more than £20,000 in a bid to help beat cancer sooner.

Linear motion experts, HepcoMotion, have been supporting Cancer Research UK since 2013, raising funds for the charity from their European and UK exhibitions.

Hepco attends approximately 15 exhibitions each year, and donates €5 for every business card it receives at a show.

Rachel Turner, Local Fundraising Manager for North Devon said: ‘It really is fantastic that HepcoMotion are supporting Cancer Research UK in Devon. They are loyal supporters and have raised £3746 from their latest exhibitions which takes their total to £21,795 overall.

“We really appreciate such brilliant support. With such generous companies like HepcoMotion as a charity we really will beat cancer sooner.”

HepcoMotion, part of the Hepco Group of companies is a world-leading manufacturer of linear motion systems and automation components. HepcoMotion has been leading the development of V Guide technology since 1969, and continues to develop innovative linear products that offer new solutions to design engineers.

The company is keen to support and promote the vital work that Cancer Research UK does in the South West.

Cancer Research UK has a team of health professionals supporting GP practices in the region in the earlier diagnosis of cancer. The programme is a partnership with the NHS to provide face-to-face tailored support to GP practices and health professionals to help improve cancer prevention, early diagnosis and cancer outcomes across the UK.

The charity also supports many clinical trials which can be accessed by patients in the South West. Men in Bristol are taking part in a trial to find the best treatment for prostate cancer that has spread. They are helping Cancer Research UK to find out if new combinations of treatments could save even more lives.

Cancer Research UK spent over £1 million last year in Bristol on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research. For example, some of its sharp minded researchers at the University of Bristol are looking into different aspects of bowel cancer including new ways to both prevent and treat the disease in future helping people in Bristol and across the UK.

The latest exciting announcement in the South West is that researchers in Exeter are to receive £5m in funding to improve the early detection of cancers in GP surgeries.  The CanTest is part of Cancer Research UK’s Catalyst Award which aims to help researchers deliver trailblazing progress in their field with long-lasting results.

The CanTest team, led by Professor Willie Hamilton - from the University of Exeter will work with researchers in three UK sites and across the globe on a five year project that will help GPs to detect cancers in a primary care setting and reduce the burden of referrals.

This research will prioritise ‘difficult-to-diagnose’ cancers, which are also associated with poorer survival outcomes, and will look at both existing and novel technologies.

Cancer Research UK receives no Government funding for its research but with help from companies like HepcoMotion the charity is fighting the disease on all fronts.

Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. But to help even more people survive, Cancer Research UK needs everyone in Devon to act.
